Industry 4.0 and Automation: Is the Jargon Damaging?

There are not many topics that gather as much attention from industry executives as "Industry 4.0", "Smart Manufacturing" and Automation.

Back in August 2020, Made in Group held a Virtual Roundtable, for thought leaders on "Smart Manufacturing" to discuss some common challenges and barriers to success in this topic. Client confusion and alienation stemming from jargon-based, “heavy” and technical language such as “Industry 4.0” itself, was cited as a major issue by many.

It was raised that, whilst some companies may suffer from conservative, inflexible and self-proclaimed “technophobe” leaders at the top - others are actually keen to learn but become disillusioned by the wealth of terms and lofty ideas, which are often foregrounded at the expense of tangible benefits when promoting “Smart Manufacturing”. Swapping technical jargon for more familiar and practical terms (i.e. “lean manufacturing”) was suggested as one solution for getting more wary companies to make that first step into the world of smart technology.

Ultimately, it was felt by those in attendance that Industry 4.0, Smart Manufacturing - or whatever else you want to call it - can successfully serve to “improve the qualities of people’s lives.” More specifically, it can improve the lives, efficiency and success of business leaders working within the manufacturing industry. So why haven't more UK firms taken a leap of faith into bionic arms of Industry 4.0 and automation?

A lack of understanding duelled with an oversaturation of jargon - an "information overload" - may go a long way to explaining this.

Made in Group conducted a poll via social media in late August 2020, asking the question "Do you feel like you know what "Industry 4.0" really means?". From the approximately 100 responses, 43% responded "Absolutely, 29% responded "Sort of, 28% responded "Not a Clue".

To discuss this issue further, alongside offer actionable ways that UK manufacturers can take the first step into embracing automation, Made in Group are hosting a Made Masterclass on Tuesday 17th November at 11:15am.

This hybrid networking and learning event will feature insight from digital manufacturing leaders from within the membership, before attendees are given the chance to discuss the theme in smaller groups.
