This instalment of the The Editor’s Pick, hosted on Wednesday 2nd February at 12pm, saw guest editor Rhys Jarman of Wright Hassall speak with 3 industry leaders from the Made in Group regarding their latest news stories.

Rhys is the IP Dispute Lawyer at Made in the Midlands Patron Wright Hassall. As Guest Editor, Rhys was able to select any recent news stories from the Made in Group membership, and decided to speak with Roy Taylor (Managing Director of Malthouse Engineering), Andrew Wellwood (Business Development Manager at AMB Co. Ltd) and Richard Perry (Director at Threeway Pressings).

The live event was kicked off by Rhys, which is streamed across all Made in Group social channels once a month to the group’s 30K+ followers, by introducing himself and the event’s guests.

The Importance of Innovation in Going Green

Rhys was keen to speak to MD Roy Taylor about their recent Go Greener news story. As Roy explained, Malthouse Engineering is taking climate change talk seriously by implementing an array of greener initiatives across the business.

Roy emphasised that Malthouse Engineering had been encouraged massively by Rover. The company has now been accredited with BS EN ISO 14001 - a environmental management certification. This allows businesses to reduce waste management costs and demonstrates commitment to protecting the environment.

One of the company's biggest green initiatives so far has been harvesting rainwater for use in their facility, mainly used in the grinding department of their plant to service steel. This was achieved by the company investing in large containers to collect the rainwater. To ensure the water was safe for employees, they also invested in ultraviolet light to help kill bacteria in the water.

Finally, Rhys asked Roy what was next in their mission to go greener accross the business, with Roy explaining that they are looking at ways of recycling the aluminium stones inside their machines that are used to grind surfaces, rather than simply having to dispose of them. Ultimately,

TWP Overcome Challenge to Reshore Work Back to the UK

The next guest Rhys spoke to was Director of Threeway Pressings, Richard Perry, on their recent news story regarding the company continuing to reshore work from the Far East, and overcoming multiple hurdles to do so.

In the midst of ongoing challenges with COVID-19 over the past couple of years, TWP has increased revenue by 15% and have purchased another milling machine that will help reshore work back to the UK. This will be the company’s 12th machine purchased in under three years.

Ultimately, with the world looking to manufacturers to become more sustainable as we strive to lower the earth’s carbon footprint, TWP’s commitment to reshoring work back to the UK has tremendous benefits all round.

Welcoming Innovation is Key for UK Firms

Finally, Rhys spoke with AMB Co. Ltd's Andrew Wellwood about their latest news story on the Made in Yorkshire platform. Andrew began the talk by providing a brief overview on AMB Co. Ltd, who are the leading supplier of hardfaced composite components to a very diverse range of industries.

Andrew also spoke on AMB Co. Ltd's recent investment in machinery, such as purchasing a new Magnum LS centre lathe, due to be installed in March/April.  Most of the company's machining centres are CNC, but due to the complexities in some of the projects that they are involved in, there’s still very much an appetite for manual equipment which will enhance their capabilities.

Rhys was keen to speak to Andrew about AMB Co. Ltd's recent investments in their digital footprint, such as launching a brand new website and being more engaged on social media. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Andrew emphasised that company's needed to be flexible in their working operations, and it has been important for the manufacturing sector to be open to new working adjustments, such as working from home. And ultimately, with UK manufacturing being a "large piece of the economic jigsaw", Andrew emphasised the importance of firms to not be adverse to change, and to welcome innovation.
