On Tuesday 8th February, OGL Computer hosted a Masterclass - exclusively for members of Made in Group - which went through everything that you might need to know regarding a cyber attack.
Made in Group were motivated to hold this event, in collaboration with security experts and Made in the Midlands Patrons OGL, due to the growing security concerns which companies in all sectors - including the manufacturing industry - need to consider. For example, in a 2021 survey, GOV UK reported that 4 in 10 companies experienced cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months.
The story behind this event came from back in 2020 when CyberGuard Technologies were contacted to tackle a very significant, real-life cyber-attack for a company with no cyber security in place. It was a rollercoaster of an incident response effort to limit the damage and gain the decryption keys for them.
This event was hosted by Sean Tickle – OGL's head of CyberGuard – how the 8 days following the attack panned out for the victim. During this event, Sean detailed the reality of being a business-owner faced with a bitcoin ransom, an insurance company declaring the policy doesn’t cover ransom payments and no pre-existing cyber security contract in place.
During Sean's presentation, those in attendance were walked anecdotally through the story behind this cyber attack - alongside what measures should be taken in such a circumstance. Following the presentation, members of Made in Group were also given the opportunity to ask Sean questions during a Q&A session, as is customary for these masterclass events.
Having joined CyberGuard in early 2020, Sean is pivotal to CyberGuard’s mission to become the leading end-to-end cyber security provider in the Midlands. As the business continues to expand into new markets and introduce new solutions to evolving threats, Sean is focused on developing specialist teams tackling specific roles such as malware reversal analysis, as well as delivering bespoke threat intelligence to share with the wider community as we battle against the growing threat from cyber criminals.
