As we venture into a new year, aspirations and resolutions abound, marking a period of reflection and anticipation. While setting goals is pivotal, the path toward achieving them isn’t always straightforward. However, for Made in Yorkshire, the journey through 2023 was marked by ambitious initiatives and significant achievements.

Yorkshire

Reflecting on the past year, Jason Pitt, Director of Made in Group, highlighted the organisation's commitment to reinvigorate Yorkshire's manufacturing landscape. He expressed, "We set out with a vision to rebuild Made in Yorkshire, investing in the platform and curating events that surpassed previous standards."

Collaborating with editorial contributor Jonny Williamson proved instrumental in devising an enhanced online meetup model. This innovation encompassed engaging discussion groups on emerging themes, chaired by Made team members or patrons. Each group discussion was meticulously documented, complemented by captivating visual graphics, encapsulating the essence of the themes discussed. Notably, over 50 members actively participated and contributed to these events throughout 2023.

Moreover, the revival of factory tours across Yorkshire was a highlight, showcasing prominent industry players such as Balmoral Tanks, Unison in Scarborough, Stauff, and Additive X in Ripon. The pinnacle event in Westminster culminated in advocating for a dedicated minister for manufacturing, fostering dialogues between industry stakeholders and policymakers.

Jason emphasised, "Our efforts in recruiting new talent and sustaining the Yorkshire community underscore our unwavering dedication to bolstering this region, an integral part of our mission to unify British industry."

Finest Hour and London project

A year-long project culminated in an exclusive podcast series featuring 24 members' stories of triumph over adversity, inspired by a serendipitous encounter with UK Art Ambassador Mark Soper. The 'Finest Hour' podcast, paying homage to the spirit of Winston Churchill during World War II, showcased Mark's artwork on an original wartime flag.

The Made in Group was also grateful to be given the opportunity to present the offical call for a 'Minister for Manufacturing'. Lord Whitby sponsored the event which gave access to 100 members to fly the flag for the UK's industrial interests. In capturing the moment the Made in Group urged MPs and Peers to take seriously the importance of backing british manufacturign in a time of global conflict.

Midlands

Looking ahead to 2024, Made in Group is expanding the success of Yorkshire factory tours to the Midlands. The inaugural tour at RSD Pressings will highlight their unique approach to local employment and adept negotiation strategies in a challenging market.

Additionally, the focus for 2024 centres on 'manufacturing growth strategies.' Jason emphasised the need to move away from a fear-based approach, stating, "The Growth Strategies initiative counters negativity, urging Western nations not to falter in their industrial pursuits."

Addressing contrasting narratives, Jason highlighted a pivotal people survey conducted in 2023, contrasting with reports urging caution. He stressed, "Expanding or contracting is largely driven by collective belief; we cannot accept contraction when adversarial nations are actively expanding their industrial base."

Growth Strategies workshop and annual report

Made in Group's forthcoming national survey and event series in the Midlands and Yorkshire will convene members keen on exploring succession planning, growth strategies, mergers and acquisitions, and the future landscape of their sectors. The calendar includes panel discussions at the MACH show, focusing on these pivotal themes.

As we step into 2024, Made in Group invites everyone to explore their new events calendar and actively participate in shaping the future of British manufacturing.
